As an audience we half hope these two attractive young people might come together, help each other, and find a little happiness. But Hitchcock doesn't let that happen. Janet Leigh, although she's somewhat flirtatious, isn't really interested in Tony Perkins. She has a lot of things on her mind and basically rejects his awkward solicitations. She's made the decision to take her life, finally, into her own hands, and so she's thinking of the future. Tony, to her, is not the future.
